“Unexplainable” Photo Snapped at Jim Morrison’s Grave

"A photograph taken in 1997 at the French cemetery where Doors frontman Jim Morrison is buried features a ghostly apparition that appears to be Morrison. Are you with us? We may lose you here: the photo has been deemed authentic, the U.K.’s Daily Express reports (via Spinner). The snapshot shows rock historian Brett Meisner standing next to Morrison’s grave at the Pere Lachaise cemetery, and in the background, there’s a white figure with its arms seemingly outstretched. Apparently, Morrison did break on through to the other side." Tags: no_tag Posted by: ampedstatus

Paul Anka gets credit for co-writing Jackson single

With a familiar high-pitched voice counting off one-two-three-four, a new Michael Jackson single debuted online Monday, prompting a hasty response from the singer's estate after Paul Anka revealed he was the song's co-writer. "This Is It" is featured on the soundtrack to the upcoming documentary featuring the late superstar, but its genesis was actually in 1983 when it was written for a duets album Anka was recording. The song was titled "I Never Heard," and Jackson and Anka are credited as co-authors on an early 1990s version recorded by the singer Sa-Fire. Anka said Jackson's estate moved quickly to give him credit, promising Anka 50 percent of the song's profits. "They did the right thing," Anka said. "I don't think that anybody tried to do the wrong thing. It was an honest mistake." Tags: Pop Posted by: ampedstatus

Judge Refuses to Punish Lawyer for Anti-RIAA Blogging

An attorney defending against a music-piracy lawsuit didn’t cross ethical bounds by filing motions broadly attacking the recording industry and posting them on his blog, a magistrate judge has ruled, rejecting demands from the RIAA for monetary sanctions. Attorney Ray Beckerman was “less than forthcoming at times” in defending a client against an RIAA lawsuit, but the music industry’s concerns were “largely overstated,” New York Magistrate Judge Robert M. Levy wrote Friday. “Although defendant’s counsel took an unusually aggressive stance and, at times, veered into hyperbole and gratuitous attacks on the recording industry as a whole, I do not find clear evidence of bad faith on counsel’s part,” Levy also ruled that the RIAA, which has sued 30,000 individuals, was not a vexatious litigant, shooting down Beckerman’s counter-complaint against his courtroom opponents. “Plaintiffs have doggedly pursued their copyright infringement claim, but I find no evidence of undue vexatiousness or ill motive on their part,” Levy wrote. An Hour of Music and Conversation with Legendary Native American Singer-Songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie

"In a Democracy Now! special, an hour of conversation and music with Cree Indian singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. In the turbulent 1960s, she was just out of college but already famous for her beautiful voice and moving lyrics in songs like “Universal Soldier” and “Now that the Buffalo’s Gone.” Over the years, Buffy Sainte-Marie has worked with the American Indian Movement, but also with Sesame Street, and even Hollywood, winning an Academy Award for the song “Up Where We Belong” in 1982. She’s won international recognition for her music, has a PhD in fine arts, and began a foundation for American Indian Education that she remains closely involved with. We speak with the folk icon about her life, her music, censorship, and her singing and speaking out about the struggles of Native American peoples for the past four decades. She also performs live in the firehouse studio." Tags: no_tag Posted by: ampedstatus

New Michael Jackson song released (Video)

Michael Jackson's first posthumous single was released today, almost four months after the star died from an overdose of anaesthetic. The track, This Is It, was delivered to radio stations amid tight security, and began streaming at Michaeljackson.com overnight. This Is It was to have been the title of Jackson's 50-concert comeback in London, which would have kicked off in the summer had he not died on 25 June at his Hollywood home. The song begins with orchestral strings as Jackson sings: "This is it, here I stand, I'm the light of the world, I feel grand." Tags: Pop Posted by: ampedstatus

Manu Chao To Play Che Guevara Memorial Concerts In Cuba

French alt-rock artist Manu Chao is in Cuba to play two concerts marking the 42nd anniversary of the assassination in Bolivia of Cuban-Argentine Revolutionary leader Ernesto 'Che' Guevara on Oct. 9, 1967. Chao and his band Radio Bemba Sound System last played in Cuba three years ago at the open-air Anti-Imperialist Tribune that faces the North American Interests Section (Sina) building, which functions as a substitute for a U.S. Embassy on the Malecon seafront. Chao, former leader of band Mano Negra, will play first on Oct. 9 at Havana University, where ex president Fidel Castro studied and developed his revolutionary ideas. On Oct. 12 - the Day of Hispanity that marks the 'discovery' of the Americas by Christopher Columbus - Chao will play in Santa Clara, 270km east of Havana, where Che's remains lie. Santa Clara was the scene of the final battle of the Castro-led insurrection against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, which was commanded by Che Guevara at the end of 1958. Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden Reunite at Pearl Jam’s Los Angeles Concert (Video)

Pearl Jam’s concert last night at Los Angeles’ Gibson Amphitheatre became the scene of a brief Temple of the Dog reunion, as Chris Cornell joined the Backspacer band for a rendition of the 1991 hit “Hunger Strike,” EW reports. The performance unified all the principal members of Temple of the Dog — Cornell, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Matt Cameron, Mike McCready and background vocalist Eddie Vedder — for the first time since 2003, when these superpowers of Seattle grunge also teamed up in California to perform “Hunger Strike” and “Reach Down.” But wait, there’s more: Rolling Stone has learned that the other members of Soundgarden — guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Ben Shepherd — came to the show with Cornell to check out their drummer Matt Cameron pounding the skins with his new band. The pow-wow represents the first time the full band has been seen publicly together in more than a decade. RS recently spoke with Thayil about the potential of a Soundgarden reunion and the possibility of fans getting their hands on scores of unreleased tracks. Tags: Rock Posted by: ampedstatus

Music Review: Bruce Springsteen Plays Final Giants Stadium Concert

Giants Stadium heard its last sha-la-las — at least, the amplified kind with tens of thousands of voices singing along — on Friday night, when Bruce Springsteen played the final concert before the stadium is demolished. During the three-hour set, sha-la-las filled this year’s “Working on a Dream,” the 1984 song “Darlington County” and Tom Waits’ “Jersey Girl,” the finale that Mr. Springsteen called the stadium’s “last dance.” It was Mr. Springsteen’s 24th performance, dating back to 1985, at Giants Stadium, where the audiences are his most fervent fans: fellow New Jerseyans. Warner Music Group Launches Web Strategy 2.0 - More Ads

"Warner Music Group is calling on a startup to help execute the lynchpin in its new approach the web. The company struck a deal with Outrigger Media, a small group spun out of video site Veoh, to package artists such as Madonna, Ashley Tisdale and Green Day for advertisers. Outrigger, headed by former Veoh sales chief and Dow Jones executive Mike Henry, will sell advertising on Warner videos across the web whether on YouTube or other distributors, such as social networks, blogs or the artist's own sites. Rather than negotiate licenses with distributors such as YouTube or AOL, Warner is seeking revenue-sharing deals in the hope that brands embrace music videos as a high-end advertising vehicle. Brian Wilson to finish some George Gershwin songs

"In a surprise union of two quintessentially American composers from different eras, one the 1960s mastermind of "Good Vibrations," the other the Jazz Age creator of "Rhapsody in Blue," former Beach Boy Brian Wilson has been authorized by the estate of George Gershwin to complete unfinished songs Gershwin left behind when he died in 1937. He plans to finish and record at least two such pieces on an album of Gershwin music he hopes to release next year." Tags: no_tag Posted by: ampedstatus

Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch "Hopeful" He Has Beaten Cancer

"Adam Yauch is feeling "healthy, strong and hopeful" that he has beaten cancer, the Beastie Boys member shared in a message to fans this week. Yauch sent an email update to the Beastie Boys' official fan list after returning from a visit to Tibetan doctors in Dharamsala, India, where he traveled shortly after undergoing surgery in late July to remove a cancerous tumor from his left parotid gland. "I'm taking Tibetan medicine and at the recommendation of the Tibetan doctors I've been eating a vegan/organic diet," says Yauch in the message, adding that his new health regimen "surprisingly enough was harder to do in India than it is now that I'm back home." Slacker Radio shows off next round of music apps

"Earlier today at CTIA Wireless 2009 (see all stories), Slacker Radio demoed its new apps for Windows Mobile, Android, and Blackberry phones. In typical slacker Radio fashion, the applications looked sleek, suave, and dark--we're not sure about dangerous. All three apps are gravitating toward a similar, standard look that tweaks the interface to add the same small improvements across the board: a new screen that tiles lyrics (visible in full with the Radio Plus subscription), biographies, and a review, and an area that reminds you which song is playing while you browse other categories. The trio of Slacker Radio apps will also start seeing some integration with social networks. The first network integration, Twitter, launched on Wednesday night in a partial offering with loose ends that the native apps will hopefully tie up." Tags: iPhone Posted by: ampedstatus

Guns N' Roses 'Vigorously Contest' Plagiarism Lawsuit

"The math on Guns N' Roses' long-awaited Chinese Democracy is not promising: no tour, no videos, no interviews and now, one lawsuit. Five days after news broke that two independent record labels filed suit against Axl Rose's band and the Universal Music Group on Friday over claims that a Democracy track illegally sampled two songs from the German electronic artist Ulrich Schnauss, the Guns camp came out blazing with a denial. "The band vigorously contests these claims and intends to respond accordingly," manager Irving Azoff said in a statement released on Tuesday. "The band believed when the record came out and still believes that there are no unauthorized samples on the track." " Tags: Rock Posted by: ampedstatus

Madonna Attacks Lady Gaga On SNL (Video)

According to this week's "Saturday Night Live," there's no love lost between Madonna and Lady Gaga. The two appeared in recurring sketch "Deep House Dish" in matching black lingerie, and then promptly began a name-calling, hair-pulling, neck-strangling catfight. Good thing it was all in the name of comedy. Though watching two of the more provocative performers in pop-culture history duke it out on stage was certainly entertaining, we can't help but think that both Kristin Wiig's "Miss Ice Tia" and Ryan Reynold's "Danny McCooz" performances were funnier. We also have a sneaking suspicion that Madonna dropped a few of her lines. Look for the awkward pause around the 4:30 mark where Madonna doesn't respond to Lady Gaga's dig, "What's wrong, Madonna? Can't get into the groove?" Tags: no_tag Posted by: ampedstatus
