Indicted Clemens tweets denial he lied to Congress

A US grand jury charged former Major League Baseball superstar Roger Clemens on Thursday with lying to Congress in 2008 when he denied taking performance-enhancing drugs. But the legendary pitcher denied he lied to US lawmakers in a Twitter reply to the indictment, saying, "I look forward to challenging the Governments accusations." Clemens was indicted on federal charges of false statements to Congress, perjury and obstruction of Congress for claiming at a hearing before US lawmakers that he never took steroids or human-growth hormones." Bull climbs into bullring stands, injures 40 in Spain [video]

"Forty people were injured when a bull leapt into the packed grandstands of a Spanish bullring and ran amok, charging and trampling on spectators, regional officials said Thursday. Video shown on Spanish media outlets showed the bull jumping several yards high out of the ring, clearing two barriers before landing in the stands and raising a panic as he lurched through the screaming crowd, charging and tossing everything he could. The animal was brought under control after several minutes and later killed."

5 Reasons Why Tiger Wood's Career Is Officially Kaput

Tiger Woods didn't win the PGA Championship yesterday, or any major this year. Get used to that sort of thing happening, because Tiger Woods will never win another major championship again. He's finished. He's not catching Jack Nicklaus. He's won what, fourteen majors? Well, that's what he'll stay on for the rest of eternity. It's a shame, because he has put his entire being into chasing Nicklaus, and we, as fans, have followed him for over a decade assuming that the record would eventually be in his grasp, and sooner rather than later. It's frustrating to get to this point and think that we'll never reach that moment with Woods. But we never will. There are a few reasons why." Tags: Tiger Woods Golf

Brett Favre returns to football, reports to Vikings camp

Exactly one year to the day after Favre Watch 2009 ended, Favre Watch 2010 bit the dust with the announcement that one Brett Lorenzo Favre reported to Minnesota Vikings training camp. This was the result of a "Great Escape"-style maneuver from three Vikings teammates to extricate Favre from the horrors of the indulgent and relaxing life at his Hattiesburg, Miss., compound and return him to the joys of training camp. Or something like that. After taking Air Viking One back to Eden Prairie, Minn., Favre practiced with the team on Wednesday, showing few effects of the ankle injury he suffered in the 2009 NFC Championship game against the New Orleans Saints. LeBron James discusses NBA free-agency move to Miami Heat in GQ

Previously limited in his comments in the wake of his dramatic free-agency shift from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat, LeBron James opened up in an interview for the September edition of GQ. In the wake of "The Decision," the free-agency selection program produced by his staff for ESPN, James said he would not have changed the approach he took to the widely panned format for his announcement. "Nothing at all," he said." Tags: Basketball

Giants quarterback Eli Manning leaves game with gash to forehead [video]

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning said he is fine after suffering a 3-inch laceration on his head and needing 12 stitches, the result of a second-quarter hit on Monday night. On third-and-1 at the Jets' 5-yard line with 11:03 remaining in the second quarter, Manning dropped back to pass on a running play and ran into Brandon Jacobs before getting drilled in the back by New York Jets linebacker Calvin Pace. With his helmet flying off, Manning fell forward and hit Jets safety Jim Leonhard's facemask. Manning got up before staggering to his knee as blood trickled down his face from his forehead. Basketball stars join President Barack Obama to play for troops

Obama pulled together an informal dream team of current and former basketball superstars Sunday. But only a few people got to see it. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah and other NBA stars joined Obama in Washington to entertain wounded troops. The present-day stars were joined by some retired legends, including Bill Russell and Magic Johnson. College player Maya Moore of the Connecticut Huskies women's team also played. The game was played for a group of "wounded warriors" -- troops injured in action -- and participants in the White House's mentoring program. It took place at a gym inside Washington's Fort McNair, a short drive from the White House. The president was inside the gym for about two hours." Tags: Basketball

Blue Jays' Brandon Morrow one out shy of no-hitter, 17 Ks

Brandon Morrow wasn't about to hang his head after coming inches away from a no-hitter. The Blue Jays pitcher still tossed his first shutout -- first complete game, in fact -- and struck out a career-high 17 batters. "Those things combined were more than enough to overcome the feeling of the missed no-hitter," said Morrow, who allowed only Evan Longoria's single with two outs in the ninth inning of a 1-0 victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday. "That would have been a great feat, but I'll start at a complete-game, one-hit shutout with 17 strikeouts."" Tags: baseball

NFL referee admits he made game-altering mistakes in 2006 Super Bowl

NFL referee Bill Leavy acknowledged he made mistakes in the Seattle Seahawks' 2006 Super Bowl loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The veteran official began an annual training-camp rules interpretation session with the Seattle media after practice on Friday by bringing up the subject without being asked. "It was a tough thing for me. I kicked two calls in the fourth quarter and I impacted the game, and as an official you never want to do that," said the veteran of 15 NFL seasons and two Super Bowls. "It left me with a lot of sleepless nights, and I think about it constantly," Leavy said of the game in February 2006. "I'll go to my grave wishing that I'd been better."" Tags: Football

A-Rod hits 600th HR as Yankees beat Blue Jays

Alex Rodriguez added his own memento to Monument Park, even though retirement remains years off. After struggling to hit his 600th home run, A-Rod reached the milestone with his usual dramatic flair. He became the youngest player to attain the mighty mark and did it by driving a pitch over Yankee Stadium's center-field fence and into the area where the pinstriped greats are remembered. And remarkably, he did it exactly three years to the day after his 500th homer. "That's amazing," Rodriguez said. "To the day." Tags: baseball

George Steinbrenner’s Evil Empire

"Death properly recalls the best in a man, even George Steinbrenner, who had Napoleonic ambition, a keen mind and a warm heart—especially with those he had just run over—to go with his free-range temper and ceaseless bluster. Steinbrenner wasn’t merely an ogre, he was a one-man raison d’étre, like Dustin Hoffman as the arch-villain in “Hook” begging Peter Pan, whose blade is at his throat: “What would the world be like without Captain Hook?” Recognizing how dull it would be, Peter lowers his blade. Hook, of course, whips out a concealed dagger, obliging Peter to terminate him in the usual ambiguous way, in case of a sequel." Tags: baseball

"Kershaw was handed a five-game suspension for intentionally throwing at Giants center fielder Aaron Rowand in the seventh inning of Tuesday night's game, which the Dodgers lost 7-5, their sixth straight defeat. Kershaw has appealed, so he'll be allowed to play until the process is complete. "I'm not going to say anything," he said, smiling. Torre received a one-game suspension for Kershaw's actions after plate umpire Adrian Johnson issued a warning to both benches in the fifth inning." Tags: baseball

Agent: Tennessee Titans, Chris Johnson agree to 2010 deal

Chris Johnson's agent says the running back and the Tennessee Titans have agreed on a revised deal that will ensure he reports with the rest of the team for training camp. Agent Joel Segal confirmed the deal Monday to The Associated Press. Segal would not say how much of a raise Johnson is getting but did say the running back will get a pay increase. Johnson reportedly will earn $2.5 million this season under the revised deal. Both sides are reviewing the contract, which could be signed within the next 48 hours. Some of his maximum $2.5 million escalator will be moved forward, and no new years will be added to the deal, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Tags: Football

Texas Rangers pitcher Dustin Nippert OK after taking line-drive to head

Texas Rangers right-hander Dustin Nippert escaped serious injury when he was hit in the head by Austin Jackson's line drive in the sixth inning of an 8-6, 14-inning win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night. The Rangers said Nippert, who walked off the field under his own power, was taken to a hospital for a CT exam, which was negative. He then returned to the team's hotel. "We'll probably give him a couple days off, just because you want to be careful when a guy gets hit in the head, but he's OK," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "It looked a lot worse than it actually was."" Tags: baseball
